Art Heals!
How?
What is that thing called creativity?

Life itself is an artform, so why not live it as such.  We so often view life as a struggle.  Instead, maybe we should look at it like it is that hunk of clay we turn into a masterpiece or the ingredients before they make our favorite dessert.  Embracing life in such a way would not only change our entire outlook on life, but also inject vast amounts of creativity and imagination into our ordinary existence.

According to Lucia Capacchione, PhD (2005), "The medium in which you create is irrelevant.  It doesn't matter whether you write a business proposal, play a piano sonata, or prepare a delicious meal.  You may be seeking to resolve one of life's mundane problems or express deep feelings and insights through poetry.  Embrace your creation as a lover and you can break through to another realm."

Creativity, unrecognized in many lives is a basic primal need.  In the same article, Dr. Capacchione also brilliantly states, "Like the source of all creation, you are a creator, too.  It is your divine birthright.  The person who says 'I'm not creative" is uttering blasphemy.  The truth is that you are the Creative Self expressing through the human vessel of your body, emotions, mind, and soul.  Creativity flows through you as a universal life force...".

When creativity is stifled or not given the time it needs, the individual often develops health problems.  Symptoms are often the soul's way of communicating to us when we don't listen to other messages.  Creative play, whether it involves, cooking, gardening, painting, sculpting, basket making, dance, or a garage band can dramatically boost your ability to heal.  Once you get into the process of creation, all time ceases to exist and problems are forgotten.  You become one with the "the zone".  Creative solutions may come to you that never occurred to your conscious mind, because now you are involved in the world of the unconscious (that part of you that wants your attention).  Brain chemicals are altered and one feels the natural high found in the creative process.  It allows an individual to express his inner most wants, needs, longings, etc that may not be possible through verbal therapies alone.

Art Therapy: Art therapy is a means by which individual's engage their own creative process by which the process itself is healing.  It can be a wonderful journey to the self.  It is often timeless and can be an effective pain reliever.  The act of making art can increase feel good endorphins, and actually elicit a creative high.  I am a masters level registered art therapist who offers many art and soul workshops.  See WORKSHOPS for the current listings.

Scientific studies have shown that creating or viewing art, listening to music, etc changes an individual's physiology.  It can cause significant changes in heart rate, perspirations, brain wave patterns, as well as positive changes in the autonomic nervous system.  These positive changes often encourage enhanced immune system functioning, circulation, organ function, and all around wellbeing.  Dr. Valerie Hunt (1996) stated that "telepathic knowing is the essence of the creative act."   Art, prayer, and healing have been shown to involve similar brain wave patterns, and all involve the inner world of spirit, visions, imagery, and emotions.  What actually happens when one is involved in the creation of or in the viewing of healing art?  The individual moves from a stressed sate to a relaxed state, from fear to expression and love.  These changes can in turn create significant healing responses on all levels.

Art Product: The art piece itself can elicit healing responses within individuals in a more specific way.  The Navajo culture, as one example, has used artwork (ie. sandpaintings) to heal disorders for thousands of years.

Much of my past art has been created as a way for me to express myself, show others the world from my perspective, or to work through an issue.  I began channeling divine energies into the work a couple of years ago, and found that people were drawn to the images they needed for healing at that time.  See ART GALLERY for this body of art work.

My most recent work; however, is guiding me to places I never thought possible.  The art itself, just by viewing it or meditating with it can aid in the healing process. I am beginning to test this via Heart Rate Variability, and would love to hear from anybody who is doing similar work.

I create individualized healing artwork in two ways:
1. After feeling the dysfunction on a sub-cellular level, I then create what that dysfunction looks like healed or what needs to take place for it to heal which seems to elicit a healing response in the viewer. The healing image is imbued with  vibrations, colors, and shapes that seem to speak directly to the viewer's dysfunctional cells.

2. In person or from a photograph, I create what I see.  This may include the individual's aura, chakra system, meridians, guides, angels, etc.  The art piece is an intuitive reading of the person's energy center.  It often helps us to remember who we are and why we are here.

What a wonderful thing this creativity is...the world would be a much happier place if we all embraced our creativity and expressed it regularly.   Live by the words of Vincent Van Gogh, "If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced."
